Book 3 · Holding the Line

The Practice of Governance at Machine Speed

Book 1 asked what governance must become; Book 2, how to design it. This book asks the simpler, more interesting question: what does it actually feel like to do it?

What it argues

Six chapters move from the board as adaptive organism to composition and capability — including a chapter following a new non-executive director through their first months in an AI-native organisation.

It examines how boards work with AI-generated intelligence without abdicating judgement to it, and argues that governance is an act of stewardship for human potential, not a performance of institutional control — the same technology that made traditional governance insufficient has also supplied the instruments for something better.

Further reading & sources

Book 3 is the least citation-dense volume in the series, by design: much of it dramatises ideas Books 1 and 2 already sourced rather than introducing new ones. This companion page is honest about which chapters draw on real research and which are the book's own invention, with reading recommendations where they apply.
